Rural Moment: Notions of Erasure: United by Territory featuring the 2023 Nevada Arts Council Visual Arts Fellows. This exhibition provides the opportunity to view selected works from 2023 Fellows: Jeffrey Burden, Glynn Cartledge, Gig Depio, Miya Hannan, Brent Holmes and Bobbie Ann Howell. Each artist created work independently from the other and with no intention of every appearing together; yet taken together, the exhibit reveals how an artist’s place, time and circumstances, create unexpected and unintended connections to world around them.

Rural Moment: Since 1985, the Nevada Arts Council’s Folklife Program has sought to document traditional culture throughout the state. Folk Arts Coordinator Blanton Owen and Folklorists Andrea Graham, Mike Luster, and Debbie Nolan traveled the state documenting people, places, and traditions. These photos presented as part of the Rural Moments exhibit are a small portion of their work in rural Nevada between 1985 and 1989.

Find Your Folklife The exhibit features 22 photographs of Nevadans dressed to represent different cultural identities, each paired with a photograph of the same person in “everyday” dress as they might appear at home, work, or enjoying recreational activities. These photo pairs have been combined on “lenticular two-flip” panels so that as the viewer approaches, they see just one of the photos. As they begin to pass by the panel, it “flips” to the other image as though by magic. The effect is created by interleaving the images on narrow strips that are refracted through an overlying lens to create the startling “two-flip” effect. Each image pair is accompanied by a statement in the model’s own words that speaks to some aspect of cultural community or identity.

This exhibition features 15 photographers and highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area.
